CARL BARAT & THE JACKALS: LET (INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC) REIGN

Carl Barat & The Jackals are something I really care about: it’s the typical feeling that pervades you when you live something from the beginning and you feel proud as this something grows and gets richer day after day.
To be honest, last year when I heard about Carl Barat’s new band selected through online auditions, I was a little bit sceptical: I wondered how Carl’s music, always so heart-driven and personal, could fit a group of surely very good but “stranger” one to another musicians.

But as I started knowing Carl and his way of being better and better in these last few months, The Jackals began something I looked up to with curiosity. That’s why I decided to see them live at 100 Club in London, last November: it was the launch of their first album “Let it Reign“, out tomorrow on Cooking Vinyl.
What I clearly remember from that night is the energy: the show was adrenalinic, pure and strong. I suddenly realized I was wrong being sceptical, as these guys sounded so good together and embodied a collective spirit of musical (and not) riot.

And I got into it.

“Glory Days“, the opening single of the upcoming album, soon got a fixed space in my morning commute playlist: although being a moving tribute to more than 300 British and Commonwealth soldiers shot for desertion during World War I, this song makes me feel ready to fight.
Why? Because I’m living a strange time in my life, where a lot of things are confused, except one: anger.
Anger towards a lot of things that sorround me and make me sick, like injustice at work, lack of meritocracy, fake relationships, little details constantly going wrong and getting quite raging and frustrating when it all keeps adding up.
As I got deeper and listened to the other songs – thanks to the free streaming on The Telegraph website – I understood that the whole Carl Barat & The Jackals world is a place where I can face this anger while screaming and offloading it.

“Let it reign” is a beautiful combination of Carl Barat’s incredible songwriting skills and three new talents’ energy: Billy Tessio (guitar), Adam Claxton (bass) and Jay Bone (drums) perfectly fit Carl’s songs and their intent. It’s a powerful combo of strong atmospheres – with ruling guitars and early Clash punk echoes – and fine lyrics, with a rocking energy keeping it all together.
Carl’s style permeates this album with both its aspects: determination and literature. We travel from the mix of melody and compelling rage in “March of The Idle” and the punk sounds of “The Gears“, through the catchy rock’nroll guitars and chorus of “Summer in the Trenches“, the rebellion against contemporary lack of human sensibility of “A Storm is Coming” and the contagious nerves of “Victory Gin“. The tracklist includes two melodic pearls like “Beginning to see ” (one of my fav since the very first listening) and the beautiful “Let it Rain“, a touching overview of deeply personal feelings closing this surprising album.

This work – so different from Carl’s solo album and even from The Libertines’ sounds, but much closer to Dirty Pretty Things’ “Waterloo to anywhere” – is a clear proof of Carlos’ renaissance. He’s back, with two bands, so different from each other but so similar in the will of showing that music always wins. It wins over personal problems and pains, it wins over social disorders and injustice. You could say no win has been seen so far, as our life keeps on being tough and our planet is nearly collapsing: true.

But music wins as long as it gives us the strength to sing our emotions – the good and the bad – and give them a direction.

And Carl Barat & The Jackals’s “Let it Reign” does.

Carl Barat & The Jackals sono un  qualcosa a cui tengo molto: è la classica sensazione che ci pervade quando viviamo qualcosa fin dal suo nascere e ci sentiamo sempre più fieri vedendo che quel qualcosa cresce e diventa più bello, giorno dopo giorno.
Ad essere sincera, lo scorso anno quando ho sentito che Carl Barat stava formando una nuova band, selezionata con audizioni online, ero piuttosto scettica: mi sono chiesta come la musica di Carl, sempre così dettata dal cuore e personale, potesse combinarsi in maniera fluida con un gruppo di musicisti certamente molto bravi, ma estranei l’uno all’altro.

Ma quando, in questi ultimi mesi, ho iniziato a conoscere sempre meglio Carl e il suo modo di essere,  anche i The Jackals hanno cominciato ad essere qualcosa che mi incuriosiva. E’ per questo che ho deciso di andarli a vedere al 100 Club di Londra, lo scorso novembre: si trattava proprio del lancio del loro primo album, “Let it Reign“, che esce domani su etichetta Cooking Vinyl.
Quello che ricordo chiaramente di quella serata è l’energia: lo show è statao adrenalinico, puro e forte. Subito, ho realizzato di aver sbagliato ad essere scettica, perchè questi ragazzi suonavano cosi bene insieme e incarnavano uno spirito collettivo di rivalsa, musicale e non.

E mi ci sono buttata.

“Glory Days“, il singolo di apertura dell’album in uscita, ha presto trovato un posto fisso nella mia playlist mattutina: pur trattandosi di un commovente tributo a più di 300 soldati britannici e del Commonwealth fucilati con l’accusa di diserzione durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, questa canzone mi fa sempre sentire pronta a lottare.
Perchè? Perchè sto vivendo un periodo piuttosto strano della mia vita, in cui molte cose sono confuse, tranne una: la rabbia.
La rabbia verso una serie di cose che mi circondano, come l’ingiustizia del mondo del lavoro, la mancanza di meritocrazia, rapporti personali falsi, piccoli dettagli che ogni giorno vanno nel modo sbagliato, e che diventano motivo di forte frustrazione e rancore quando continuano a sommarsi uno all’altro.
Mano a mano che approfondivo ed ascoltavo le altre canzoni – grazie allo streaming gratuito disponibile in questi giorni sul sito del Telegraph – ho capito che l’intero mondo dei Carl Barat & The Jackals è un posto dove io posso affrontare questa rabbia, urlandola e disfandomene.

“Let it reign” è una bellissima combinazione delle incredibili capacità compositive di Carl Barat e dell’energia di tre nuovi talenti: Billy Tessio (chitarra), Adam Claxton (basso) e Jay Bone (batteria) sono perfetti per le canzoni di Carl e il loro intento. E’ un ottimo combo di forti atmosfere – con chitarre che la fanno da padrona ed eco punk dei primi Clash  – e testi ricercati, con un’energia rock a raccogliere il tutto.
Lo stile di Carl permea questo album di entrambi i suoi aspetti: grinta e letteratura. Viaggiamo così dal mix di melodia e rabbia urgente di “March of The Idle” e le sonorità punk di “The Gears“, attraverso il rock’n roll e l’orecchiabilità di “Summer in the Trenches“, la ribellione nei confronti della mancanza di sensibilità dell’umanità contemporanea di “A Storm is Coming” e la contagiosa sfrontatezza di “Victory Gin“. La tracklist include due perle melodiche, come “Beginning to see ” (una delle mie preferite fin dal primissimo ascolto) e la meravigliosa “Let it Rain“, una toccante panoramica di emozioni profondamente personali, a chiudere questo sorprendente album.

Questo lavoro – così diverso dal primo album solista di Carl così come pure dalle sonorità dei Libertines, ma anzi ben più vicino all’album  “Waterloo to anywhere” dei  Dirty Pretty Things – è una chiarissima prova della rinascita di Carlos. E’ tornato, con due nuove band, così diverse l’una dall’altra eppure tanto simili nella voglia di dimostrare che la musica vince sempre. Vince sui problemi e i dolori personali, vince sulle ingiustizie e sugli squilibri della società. Potreste dire che in realtà al momento non si è vista nessuna vittoria, visto che le nostre vite continuano ad essere terribilmente dure e il nostro pianeta si trova sull’orlo del collasso: vero.

Ma la musica vince nel momento in cui ci dà la forza di cantare le nostre emozioni – belle e brutte – e dar loro una direzione.

E “Let it Reign” dei cari Carl Barat & The Jackals lo fa.
